Riverdale is the gateway to Toronto's east-end neighbourhoods, offering a diverse community, colourful shopping district and quaint Victorian and Edwardian homes. While it is considered a high density neighbourhood, it is blessed with an abundance of parkland. Riverdale Park to the east is one of the largest green spaces in the city. It's steep hills are a favourite of tobogganers. Withrow Park to the west is a neighbourhood hub and meeting place with a popular farmers market. Top ranked schools, great shopping and convenient access to transit have attracted many families to this popular neighbourhood.
The residential landscape within Riverdale is made up primarily of Victorian and Edwardian style homes, constructed in the 1800s as boarding rooms for the working-class. Many of the residences have since been redeveloped into homes for young families with homes redesigned to fit the tree-lined streetscape. Housing values for North Riverdale have increased significantly with a new generation of young professionals and their families furthering already widespread gentrification.
South Riverdale offers on average smaller, older and less expensive homes but this is changing quickly as younger families look to enter the neighbourhood at a more affordable price point.
